Durable and Stylish Cutting Boards by UBBH

At UBBH, we pride ourselves on using top quality materials, tools and processes, because we believe this allows us to provide our customers with the best product.

Our cutting boards are made from the solid hardwood species most preferred by chefs to ensure your food safety, and with proper care they will last several lifetimes. They are also made to complement any style or décor, providing both a pleasing look and unmatched functionality.

Our Range of Handcrafted Cutting Boards

We are pleased to offer a variety of cutting boards to suit your needs. All of them have a food-safe finish that protects and preserves the wood while also safeguarding your food.

Large Cutting Boards

Our large cutting boards are big enough to accommodate pretty much any chef's needs. Each board has a unique pattern created by the wood species used and how they were combined, making them as much an artistic expression as they are a pleasure to use.

  • Size: 12" x 17" x 7/8"
  • Non-slip rubber feet included*
  • Available plain or customized with laser engraving

*Boards with laser engraving do not include non-slip feet, so you can cut on the non-engraved side if you prefer.

Shaped Cutting Boards

We also offer a line of shaped cutting boards, available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes to complement any style or décor. As with our large cutting boards, shaped boards are available with or without laser engraving, so each and every board is truly unique.

Eco-Friendly Materials and Processes

It's no surprise that wood is more ecologically friendly than plastic, or even paper. It is strong and durable, and with proper care and minimal maintenance, it will last several lifetimes.

With so many people now focused on sustainability and preserving resources, using wood to make cutting and serving pieces may seem more harmful than beneficial. UBBH is committed to protecting the environment and the natural resources we all rely on, so we only use suppliers who source their materials from responsible, certified-sustainable providers.

Sustainable forestry practices have led to reforestation that replenishes supplies and minimizes the impact of logging on surrounding communities and wildlife. Better managed forests also produce better quality lumber that is less affected by disease and pests, which means a higher quality product for our customers.

How We Choose Our Wood Species

We are very selective about the wood species we use. Every species must meet these four requirements:

  1. Food-safe: Some woods have naturally occurring saps and oils that are not healthy to ingest, and some are poisonous.
  2. Tight grain: The more open the grain, the more likely food particles or bacteria will be absorbed, which can contaminate anything else that touches the board. A tight grain also helps repel water, preserving both the look and function of the board.
  3. The right hardness: Cutting boards should be hardwood so they stand up to knives and other utensils, but wood that's "too hard" will quickly dull and damage your knives.
  4. Fast-growing: We never want to use species that can't be replenished in a timely fashion when there are so many options that can be.

The Best Choice for Professional and Home Chefs

There is a misconception that plastic cutting boards are more hygienic than wood because they can go in the dishwasher or be exposed to extremely hot water.

In recent years, however, a study showed plastic cutting boards to be a significant source of microplastics in food. This is a huge concern, as ingesting plastic and the chemicals found in it can lead to a variety of health issues.

Numerous studies have also debunked the idea that properly maintained wood cutting boards harbour bacteria and cause cross-contamination. This makes wood the clear choice for both professional and home chefs.

Advantages of UBBH Cutting Boards

We purchase the raw material for our cutting boards from certified sustainable suppliers. We only use solid hardwoods with both the hardness to stand up to kitchen utensils and the tight grain that protects your food safety. The result is a board that offers years, even generations, of function and beauty.

Longevity and Durability

Our cutting boards are made with top quality raw materials and the highest level of craftsmanship to ensure durability, longevity and customer satisfaction. With proper care and maintenance, your board will become a treasured family heirloom.

How to Clean Your Wood Cutting Board

After Each Use

  1. Remove any food residue with a scraper.
  2. Clean with mild dish detergent and a clean sponge or soft brush.
  3. Rinse with warm water.
  4. Towel dry, then stand the board upright to air dry completely for up to an hour.

After Cutting Raw Meat or Poultry

  1. Sprinkle the board with 2 tablespoons of salt and let it sit for 10 minutes.
  2. Scrub off the salt with a soft brush and cold water.
  3. Wash with a clean sponge or scrub brush, mild dish detergent and hot water, working up a slight lather.
  4. Rinse the board thoroughly.
  5. Towel dry, then stand upright to air dry for up to an hour.

Care Instructions for Your Cutting Board

Periodically oil and condition your board to keep it protected:

  1. Apply an even coat of mineral oil to all 6 sides of the board.
  2. Let the oil absorb into the wood for up to 24 hours.
  3. Wipe off any excess with a soft, dry cloth.
  4. Apply a thin coat of board butter and buff with a soft, dry cloth.

Best Practices for Daily Use

  • Never put your wood cutting board in the dishwasher.
  • Never submerge your board in a sink of water.
  • Follow the cleaning and care instructions provided with your board and detailed above.
  • Consider designating a specific board for raw meat and poultry as an extra safeguard against cross-contamination, as many kitchens do.

Keeping Your Board Like New

With proper care and maintenance, your board should keep its natural beauty for its entire lifetime. If it starts showing signs of wear or heavy knife use, you can refresh it:

  1. Lightly sand with 80 grit sandpaper to remove the wear.
  2. Sand again with 180 grit sandpaper until the surface is completely smooth.
  3. Apply a heavy coat of food-safe mineral oil and let it penetrate for 24 hours.
  4. Wipe off any excess with a clean, dry, soft cloth.
  5. With another clean, dry, soft cloth, apply a thin layer of conditioning board butter (like UBBH's proprietary board butter) and buff until smooth.
